I spent the day yesterday, March 15th (the Ides of March) taking in some local Philly culture. I went to the St. Patrick's Day parade with my friend, Jason Rosen. Here is a clip:
St Patrick's Parade
After the parade, my friend and I went to another Philly institution, Schlesinger's Deli.
Schlesinger's Deli is a Jewish-style delicatessen located at 1521 Locust Street. I like going to Schlesinger's instead of Famous 4th St Deli because the portions sizes are a bit more reasonable. I also like the complimentary pickle bar which has an array of pickels, health salad, macaroni salad, and potato salad. I had the "Andrea Reuben," which is a Reuben sandwich made with pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and russian dressing, on toasted rye bread. I skipped ordering the fries because I was indulging enough. The sandwich was absolutely delicious, as usual! The meat was hot, tender and flavorsome, there was ample portions of meat and sauerkraut, the cheese and dressing were also in the right proportions, the bread was toasted and buttery good. The baked goods are to die for. They look so tempting and delicious. Looking was all I did. In all a very nice lunch.
After lunch Jason and I went to Chintown. I wanted to buy some macha powder. I went to Chung May Chinese Grocery Store. It is located at 1017 Race St. This was the first time I went into this grocery store. I was a bit disappointed with my exploration of this store. The store had a limited selection of items. I did not find what I was looking for. I did end up buying some of the guava hard candies I saw at a reasonable price. I also saw some sesame oil and sauces at lower prices compared to other stores. Despite the limited selection, I will go back for the items I did see cheaper. When I stepped out of the store, a parade was going up 11th St. Here is a link:
Chinatown Parade
It was a short parade. I also was not sure what the parade was for. The costumes were elaborate and very colorful. I am going to see what I can find out about the parade and let everyone know.
